9 Best Quilts for Thru Hiking in 2021

9 Best Quilts for Thru Hiking in 2021

For many thru hikers a quilt has become a must have choice for dropping some pack weight while providing that amazing level of warmth that is frequently needed on a long thru hike.

While there are many reviews out there I wanted to list out what I view as my favorites overall to help ensure you get the best value and performance from your gear while keeping prices within your needs.

I would rank the EE Revelation as the top in class as every thru hiker appears to want to acquire this model, though if you suffer from cold feet the EE Enigma is a far better option!

The only huge factor to focus on is the time of year you are starting your hike as you need to make sure if you are in the early spring or late fall where cold is prevalent you pair any of these with a high R-Value sleeping pad!

Enlightened Equipment Revelation

This is the favored quilt on YouTube for nearly all thru hikers who vlog their journey, much of it due to the high quality and durability the gear provides but in addition EE is a cottage company here in the US.

The other reason that so many hikers love this quilt is that the custom version has so many options available, from fabric types, to colors, to the fill power you can make the exact quilt to match you and your personality.

Features and Benefits of the Enlightened Equipment Revelation

  • 850fp down. Ethically sourced from an RDS certified supplier.
  • Outer fabric is either a Forest 10D, Burnt Orange 10D, or Navy 10D fabric. Liner fabric is a Charcoal 10D. Fabric has a DWR finish.
  • Footbox has a 20” zipper and shock cord combination for a totally adjustable closure
  • Pad attachment system uses elastic straps and clips on each side of the quilt to keep it secure on a sleeping pad and lock out drafts on cold nights.
  • Snap and drawcord neck closure lets you fine-tune draft control.
  • Unique U-shaped continuous baffles keep the down where you need it, all night long.
  • Includes Silnylon Stuff Sack (.3oz-.8oz), 100% cotton storage bag, and 2 Elastic Straps (0.4oz each - One Straight, One Loop).
  • Stuffed, finished and inspected in Winona, MN. Shells are imported.

Special Features (Pros) of the Enlightened Equipment Revelation

Easy to Move Around - The benefit to the EE Revelation and quilts is your ability to adjust and move around, repositioning and not feeling "constrained" like in a traditional sleeping bag is amazing!

Versatile Use - Ability to open up wide into a blanket when the temperatures are higher than the rating allows for even better draft and temperature monitoring and comfort.

Compacts Well In Backpack - The EE Revelation quilt shrinks down dramatically in the stuff sack to fit in your pack leaving you lots of room for other gear in the same place!

Drawbacks (Cons) for the Enlightened Equipment Revelation

Video: Enlightened Equipment Revelation Review

Delicate Fabrics - As many of these lighter fabrics go you need to be careful and not overly abusive as they can rip or tear if caught with very little force being applied.

Cold Feet - Since the toe box isn't sealed up in a traditional box some people have experienced cold feet as air can get in when pulled together due to the little circle that exists from the drawstring.

I love to read how others use and interact with gear to get a better feel for the community and all the shipped products and not a lucky one that a person received.

Looking at the features and benefits is great, but taking a look at what real-and-actual customers have to say about a product offers a far more involved and deeper understanding.

Here I’ve curated reviews that reflect the Enlightened Equipment Revelation, providing feedback from product users and reviewers on independent review sites.

Independent Reviews and Recommendations for the Enlightened Equipment Revelation

We believe highly in EE and recommend checking out the Revelation Quilt if you’re looking to prepare for a thru-hike or upgrade your existing bag. This is an amazingly ultralight, 3-season sleeping bag or quilt. - Nomad Hiker

Even when enclosed, I find the Revelation to be far more comfortable than any bag I have used in the past. It holds the warmth in wonderfully and I still get to move my legs and arms around. If it gets even colder, you can use the same attachment points on the side of the quilt to snap it into the familiar mummy shape and hold on to as much body heat as you can product. - Read More

These quilts have been gaining in popularity, and for good reason.  They’re mostly manufactured by smaller companies that also make their gear in the States like EE.  The value is excellent, as you are getting a custom made quilt for prices that easily beat bags made by companies that outsourced manufacturing to China. - Read More

What Thru Hikers Have Said About the Enlightened Equipment Revelation

People have fallen in love with these quilts and they are a highly valued item largely used by people attempting thru-hikes to be comfortable and warm.

After a test night in the backyard and a 3 night backpacking trip, I’ve officially been converted to quilts! I’m 6’2” and about 200 lbs, side/stomach sleeper mostly. The Revelation makes it so easy to move around and adjust your sleeping position. The straps are awesome and keep the quilt in place. It’s also incredibly easy to adjust your warmth by either cinching or loosening. - More on EE

I took the Revelation quilt to Argentina for a month, and it was all I could ask of it. Light and warm, but especially more comfortable than a sleeping bag. No constrictive footbox, no zipper to get caught on the draft tube, no wasted weight. The blue of this 20º quilt is a great color. The two sleeping pad straps are simple and brilliant. On warmer nights I only used one. I also love that its sewn in Winona! I played Ultimate with some good players from Winona. - More on EE

So far, used the 20 degree quilt in about 30 degree temps. This was my first backpacking experience, so was a little worried about how the quilt would work out, but I loved it! It kept me very warm wearing only a base layer. I had bought a down puffy just for sleeping in, but wound up not needing it, even though I typically get cold very easily. I was also worried about my feet getting cold, but the zipper and draw string allowed me to completely close up the lower portion and there were no issues with drafts. - More on EE

My Opinion On the Enlightened Equipment Revelation

I am personally saving up to purchase this quilt for my upcoming Ouachita Trail thru hike and its because of the overwhelming love I see from the community that I know it is worth the investment.

The Enlightened Equipment Revelation is highly compactable too which will help it take up less space in my pack than my current synthetic quilt making it a perfect match to drop my pack weight and use less pack space.

Zpacks Solo

Zpacks has created some of the most beloved tents and backpacks used in thru hiking, along with being a cottage local company within the United States.

Their sleeping quilts haven't received the same amount of attention that their other gear has online but that isn't due to quality or because it isn't good, it just doesn't appear to be able to outshine their tent and backpack lines.

They tend to be more expensive overall but this is due to using more durable materials and higher quality down allowing the weight to be much lower than similar quilts from other manufacturers.

Features and Benefits of the Zpacks Solo

  • Constructed of 900-fill water-resistant goose down that stays dry for about 90% longer than untreated down and is also incredibly comfortable with moisture. It has C0 water repellent with no PFOA or PFOS. Their down is responsibly sourced and what's more, it's certified as being sustainable with the 'Responsible Down Standard' Certification.
  • Each compartment is overstuffed with 30% more 900 Fill Power Premium Goose Down than is necessary for maximum loft to account for any future down compression.
  • Vertical baffles on the upper body keep down from migrating to the sides. Tightly spaced compartments help keep the down evenly distributed so there are no cold spots. There are no "sewn through" seams.
  • The rectangular foot box is roomy, and fits the shape of your feet comfortably when lying on your side, on your stomach, or on your back with your feet angled out in a relaxed position.
  • Black fabric on the inside for quick drying. Both the liner and the shell are treated with C0 durable water repellent to resist rain spray and body moisture.
  • The quilt has a flat clip at the center to help keep the sides secured underneath you. A strap is also included that allows you to clip the quilt to your sleeping pad, to help you stay on your pad at night. The strap adds +.4 oz (11 g) if you choose to use it.
  • A flat clip at the top keeps the bag securely closed.
  • An Elastic cord can be cinched tight around your neck to keep out drafts, or pull the bag up around your ears. This bag does not have a hood- wear a warm hat, or a Goose Down Hood, or size up in length if you want to pull it up around your head.
  • A Roll Top Dry Bag is included, and adds ~.9 ounces (25.5 grams) to the listed weight. The dry bags are a comfortable fit and can be compressed smaller by squishing the contents and rolling the top down more.
  • All Zpacks gear has a two year limited warranty against defects in materials or workmanship.

Special Features (Pros) of the Zpacks Solo

Overfill - The quilt is overfilled which allows for compression and no loss in warmth performance, this is nice as over a 2000 mile trip!

High Quality Craftsmanship - The stitching and work that goes into these quilts is impressive amongst all the reading I have done. Purchasers have said there is not a single missing stich nor a stitch out of place.

Water Resistant Coating - There is high marks from all buyers as to the ability to cowboy camp out under the stars and that dew in the morning can be dry by just hanging the bag (in good weather obviously).

Drawbacks (Cons) for the Zpacks Solo

Cost - The Zpacks Solo is one of the more expensive options on this list and this can make it hard to choose if you are on a fixed budget.

Limited Customizations - Unlike some of the other quilts on this list the Zpacks Solo doesn't have many customization options so you will only fit with what they create.

Independent Reviews and Recommendations for the

If you are looking for the lightest weight minimalist style quilt that’ll still keep you warm, then absolutely! - Backwoods Pursuit

I’ve owned this sleeping bag for a year and a half now. In total I’ve used it for 4 months last summer on the Appalachian Trail, 3 1/2 months while tea house trekking in Nepal’s Himalya mountains, 2 weeks in the Peruvian Andes, and for 6 months this year while working in the Utah desert (not including my days off). - Mountains With Megan

What Thru Hikers Have Said About the Zpacks Solo

I took this quilt with me on a 5 day section of the PCT and it performed beautifully. First night out, I cowboy camped under a clear sky, only to wake up and find that the dew had settled onto my quilt rather heavily, and was completely wet to the touch on the outside of the fabric. Drying it out was a quick process, the water resistant down really did a great job in this aspect.

This being my very first down bag and my very first quilt I don't believe I'll ever go back to a mummy or synthetic bag. From the weight to the packability, it's ability to keep me warm at night and just the overall construction I am beyond pleased with the product. Along with my Zpacks Duplex tent I think I've found my new favorite brand of backpacking gear.

The 20F Regular height/width quilt not only kept me warm but did so in style. Note: I was wearing Smartwool tops and bottoms with thick wool socks and a wool beanie. I did tuck my head in at night. Still, I was stunned by how comfortably warm I was.

My Opinion On the Zpacks Solo

I am very interested in Zpacks but in wanting something outside of black, blue, and highlighter green I don't have much choice. While this isn't a gamebreaker, they also have a longer lead time and higher costs with a lower weight.

From researching, hikers haven't been sad with their purchases as it gets a whole load of 5 star reviews on Zpacks.com that you can check out if interested for more input.

Feathered Friends Flicker UL

The Flicker down sleeping bag celebrates the ease and versatility of ultralight backpacking while maintaining comfort. The Flicker is a perfect size for a hiker on the go, providing you warmth inside but still have the ability to move around easily.

The Flicker is the ultralight, fully-functional sleeping bag that goes anywhere and does anything. With 950+ fill power down and an Ultrex® fabric for maximum comfort and versatility without compromising on weight.

Features and Benefits of the Feathered Friends Flicker UL

  • Full-length center zip allows the Flicker to function as a fully unzipped quilt
  • Bottom drawcord creates a footbox for colder conditions
  • Draft collar with two easily accessible drawcords
  • Continuous baffles let you position the down where you need it
  • Crossover zipper design provides the heat retention of a draft tube without the added weight or bulk
  • Low weight, low bulk YKK #4 fully separating zipper
  • Small webbing loops for use as a hammock underquilt
  • Stuff sack and cotton storage bag included

Special Features (Pros) of the Feathered Friends Flicker UL

Versatile & Adaptable - Unlike other quilts on this list the provided center zipper allows you to pull all the way up into a full sleeping bag in those conditions that warrant it.

Quality Material & Stitching - When reading through owners reports on forums and in other websites they are very happy with the quality material and that the stitching is on point and perfect for a long lasting build.

Drawbacks (Cons) for the Feathered Friends Flicker UL

Cost - This is the most expensive quilt on the list which is quite a feat given how expensive some of these are, for those looking for a good price to performance this quilt kind of, for me at least, a little short.

Weight - The Flicker is a lightweight and compact backpacking quilt for people who are seeking an ultralight, travel-ready solution, but it's not as light or thin as some of its competitors.

Most hikers tend to view quilts as more of a mostly 3 season backpacking item and rarely take them on sub-freezing trips, you could easily bump up to the 30°F model (1 lb. 7 oz.) or 40°F model (1 lb. 2.4 oz.) to save some weight and pack space.

Here I’ve curated reviews that reflect the Feathered Friends Flicker UL, providing feedback from product users and reviewers on independent review sites.

Independent Reviews and Recommendations for the Feathered Friends Flicker UL

The biggest point of differentiation between the Flicker UL and other quilts on this list is the full-length zipper. While some might complain that a zipper adds weight, others will appreciate the versatility. We recommend the Flicker as a nice all-in-one option for those on the fence between sleeping bag and quilt. - Switchback Travel

Overall there is little wrong that can be found in the Flicker sleeping bags. These are just high-quality bags that are made to last and created with superior materials. While the Flicker bags are particularly appealing to hikers and backpackers, due to the UL design, anyone will enjoy using these bags and appreciated the compactness. They are cozy, comfortable, very warm and keep you safe from wet conditions. - All Outdoors Guide

The Feathered Friends Flicker 40 UL is the highest scoring ultralight sleeping bag in our review and an easy choice for our Editors' Choice Award. Versatility is a large part of what makes a summer bag great, and this one proved to be an optimal choice whether the temperatures were warm or cool and chilly. - OGL

What Thru Hikers Have Said About the Feathered Friends Flicker UL

I have gradually acquired several Feathered Friends products and have been very happy with all of them. The quality, fit, and performance are always great. Each one is essential to my outdoor adventures.

The company and this ultra light quilt bag delivered in every way exceeding all expectations. Couldn’t have been more pleased at home when it arrived early or on the trail when the temps tested the ratings.

I cannot believe how lightweight and the thermal resistance. I'm leaving in the a month for the AT, so I'll know it's true grit. My only complaint, and I hope this doesn't create too significant of an impact, is that the stitching goes straight through the bag rather than using baffles.

My Opinion On the Feathered Friends Flicker UL

This one is intriguing as I have heard much less about it overall than other small quilt cottage companies, Feathered Friends doesn't have the same wide range of quilts as some of the others on this list so unless you catch it you could miss them.

Like Zpacks though they are much more limited than the big quilt players like EE, I love being able to super customize my gear when the options are there and the cost stays the same.

Outdoor Vitals Stormloft

With the Stormloft I wanted to cover a quilt that is more on the starting budget side but with a temperature rating that will survive the cold you can experience on a long distance trail like the AT, PCT, or CDT.

Unlike most of the above quilts the Outdoor Vitals line only comes in fixed colors based on the supported temperature ranges, but the have multiple ranges of quilts from 0 to 30 degrees to fit your needs, they also have a synthetic if you need a more budget approach.

Features and Benefits of the Outdoor Vitals Stormloft

  • Cadillac of TopQuilts: The new StormLoft™ topquilt not only features premium treated down but features the best materials in a superior baffling design for the most warmth and least weight!
  • Lightest Weight Materials: Feel as light as a feather while packing our new lightest weight fabric (10D) and highest quality down (800+FP).
  • Hybrid Baffle Design: Stay warm everywhere with our hybrid baffling system that optimizes both the stability of down for warmth and minimizing seam weight for lighter packs!
  • Small In Your Pack: Your back will thank you for using premium ultralight materials and so will your backpack because these materials compress smaller taking up less space in your backpack!
  • Fully Sewn Footbox - Fully baffled design with sewn footbox will keep you warm and insulated on all sides
  • Perfect For Hammock Use - Wide design ideal for ground sleeping or use in a hammock enables you to take your quilt on any trip
  • Utilizes DWR treated 800+ fill power down to keep your pack light and you warm and comfortable
  • Top cinch cord to seals in heat so you don't feel cold around our shoulders and neck
  • Hybrid baffle design keeps down locked in where it needs to be, which means you'll have optimal warmth and will sleep better

Special Features (Pros) of the Outdoor Vitals Stormloft

High Compressibility - Due to the down this sleeping quilt can be highly compacted and stuffed into a super small sack, or if you use a frameless pack this fits easily into the cracks and gaps in your pack.

Budget Friendly (Price to Weight) - The cost to performance is beyond most hikers imagination, providing solid warmth when paired with the correct sleeping pad for a given temperature at the cost you pay versus others.

Generous Footbox - Overall there is plenty of space in the sewn in footbox and your feet aren't constrained. They can move freely around while you shift without issue.

Drawbacks (Cons) for the Outdoor Vitals Stormloft

Slow Initial Loft From Shipment - The sleeping quilts are compressed prior to shipping which means when received many need to open and let them breathe to expand back out fully.

Limited Customizations - Unlike most of the quilts from cottage companies on this list the Stormloft only has 3 specific builds for temperature and a matching color there is no customizing it to fit your wants other than by size and temperature.

Independent Reviews and Recommendations for the Outdoor Vitals Stormloft

I’ve had a blast testing the quilts, although I had to wait a while for the weather to really drop here in northern Arizona before I could really test the temperature rating. The under quilt seals up nicely and adjusts well. The top quilt foot box is as solid as they come and really holds its shape around my feet without shifting down. I think this was one of the first times I was able to sleep bare foot in the quilt and still keep my feet warm. It was awesome. - The Ultimate Hang

Using this quilt, you can thrash around and stick out your arms and legs to your heart's content - no "confined to quarters" feeling as in a sleeping bag. And regardless of where and how you curl up in this quilt, you will remain warm for three season camping - even if the quilt gets wet. - Hiking For Her

When I first laid eyes on the 30 Degree StormLoft TopQuilt, I was shocked that it was possible to build a lightweight sleeping bag that has such an affordable cost. Even someone with little money (like me) can buy this product. And it doesn't lack quality. Overall, I've been truly impressed by this TopQuilt. - Trailspace

What Thru Hikers Have Said About the Outdoor Vitals Stormloft

Well this is my first review I've ever done. Outdoor vitals 0 deg top quilt is fantastic. This is my first quilt and use of a quilt. I received it as a gift from my wife for Christmas. I just recently got a chance to use it on a trip to northeastern California the temperature drop to 20deg. and I stayed warm and toasty. - More on Outdoor Vitals

For the past few years, I've wanted to thru-hike the AT and started acquiring gear and getting back out. Being 100% service-disabled without a second source of income limits my spending on the hiking budget. Now that the time is coming close I wanted to switch from a sleeping bag to a quilt. I wanted something warm, durable, and functional while being budget and weight-conscious. This quilt is exactly that. It's extremely warm, the weight (I got the 0 degree Long/Wide) is within an ounce of advertisement, the production quality is high, and it compresses excellently. - More on Outdoor Vitals

I purchased the 30 degree long/wide because that was in stock and I'm glad I got it. I used this for my bikepacking trip in mid-October in Pennsylvania. Night time temps were in mid to lower 40s. I have a Therm-A-Rest NeoAir All Season with an R value of 4.9 and the Outdoor Vitals mummy bag liner that I use as a sheet on top of my sleeping pad. This worked out to be a great system. I am a side and stomach sleeper and I move around a lot. I was able to keep the quilt on me and when it got a little colder in the morning, I pulled it up over my head and I stayed nice and toasty. - More on Outdoor Vitals

My Opinion On the Outdoor Vitals Stormloft

I have actually been a fan of the Outdoor Vitals gear for a while as I have the awesome 60L Shadowlight Backpack and ultralight sleeping pad, I have also recently purchased their Ventus hoodie for my planned Ouachita Trail thru hike.

Their gear continually lives up to my needs, Their quilt is next on my list as a option to help drop more weight while getting that high quality I want and demand, I can't express how happy I am with Outdoor Vitals.

Enlightened Equipment Enigma

Very similar to the Revolution listed above with a few caveats that will make it more suitable for some than others, for example, the Enigma features a fully sewn closed footbox and not a draw so it tends to provide warmer foot space.

Due to this sewing in on the footbox this also lowers its weight versus needing the drawcord and enclosure zipper but also means you aren't able to open it fully like a blanket should you want to.

Features and Benefits of the Enlightened Equipment Enigma

  • 850FP untreated down.
  • Poofy sewn-closed footbox for a no-fuss sleeping experience
  • Pad attachment system uses elastic straps and clips on each side of the quilt to keep it secure on your sleeping pad and lock out drafts
  • Snap and drawcord neck closure lets you fine-tune draft control
  • Unique U-shaped continuous baffles.
  • All of our down is ethically sourced from an RDS certified supplier
  • Ultralight nylon fabric has a DWR finish and has been customized for breathability and comfort
  • Fabric colors may appear different from images shown due to rendering and monitor differences.
  • Handmade in Winona, Minnesota.

Special Features (Pros) of the Enlightened Equipment Enigma

Sewn In Footbox - For those who suffer from cold feet syndrome, like I do on occasion, having a closed in footbox means much better continual heat and less loss meaning warmer toes without a set of down booties.

Light and Compact - For the size and weight you get a quilt that can fit into any backpack without consuming the internal space nor adding backbreaking weight making it a pleasure to carry.

Drawbacks (Cons) for the Enlightened Equipment Enigma

Firm Drawstring Cord - No give if you cinch tight, if it is elastic it could stretch more as you breathe which would feel less like you are choking if tightened down hard.

Independent Reviews and Recommendations for the Enlightened Equipment Enigma

Great loft, super soft material and being warmer than the temp rating were some of the main reasons I loved the Enigma quilt. The dual snap closure is perfect, and I didn’t experience any cold spots during testing. The material is silky smooth and it packs down crazy small. - Backwoods Pursuit

This quilt is impressive in helping to keep you incredibly warm while simultaneously helping you drop weight. This is what is needed to help you get to those low base weights to help with longer travel. - Nomad Hiker

What Thru Hikers Have Said About the Enlightened Equipment Enigma

Purchased enigma 40 with wide option, have been out twice now in my hammock and have been very pleased with purchase. Very comfortable, packs easy and like that it comes with a Large storage bag. Definitely will Purchase another with lower temp for winter. - More on EE

This quilt functions amazingly in the field. It is ultralightweight and it's versatility is superb. You can open it up for ventilation when you first go to sleep and then close it up in steps as the night gets colder so you stay in a comfortable temperature range all night long. Ditch your bag and get this quilt! You will be glad you did! - More on EE

I am beyond satisfied with this quilt! I was skeptical about purchasing the 30 degree quilt as I was planning on spending multiple nights in The sawtooth mountains at 9k ft in September. The temperatures got down to 34 degrees and I was completely warm, my feet especially which is usually the first to go. The loft in this bag in unbelievable, and the comfort level is unmeasurable. The quilt comes with a very nice strap system that you can configure in different ways, as well as a top button closure for colder nights. I would honestly take this bag with temps in the high 20’s to low 30’s without hesitation - More on EE

My Opinion On the Enlightened Equipment Enigma

This is by far one of the quilts that I want to get, though instead of stock I feel I will go with the custom and pay the premium to get more fabric choices and drop the temperature down more along with adding in additional down, you can check out all the custom options here.

As to stock, for the price there isn't many quilts that I think are equal to performance that you get with EE, the Enigma is an outstanding option for those who want a open quilt but closed in footbox.

Packs Down Small - While being incredibly lofted once setup it is able to be compressed down into the provided stuff sack without much effort.

Drawbacks (Cons) for the Sea To Summit Ember

Cost - As you may notice price is on this list as a con many times, this is the same with many others if you are looking for high quality craftsmanship you will need to pay for it as it doesn't come cheap.

Independent Reviews and Recommendations for the Sea To Summit Ember

So this Sea to Summit Ember EbII Quilt is a great item for through-hikers, cycle tourers, and for any activity where the weight and packed size matter. This is a versatile product and built with the highest standards. In a warmer environment, you can use it as a blanket and have all the freedom for your feet and arms. At lower temperatures, use those two drawcords and cinch the quilt around your feet and the chest. This will keep the heat loss at a minimum. - Mountains for Everybody

All in all, this is a solid, lightweight quilt that would be useful on most summer hiking adventures. While warm sleepers might take this along on a thru-hike such as the PCT, I’d personally only trust it for a fast hike of the comparatively warmer Appalachian Trail, and opt for the 20-degree version for the PCT. - The Trek

At the end of the day, the Sea to Summit Ember Quilt really is a well-made quilt that offers you a lot of versatility and high quality in a compact and lightweight package.  I didn’t care for the pad strap setup or the lack of a button at the neck, which are the only two reasons I didn’t love this quilt. It is on the expensive side for a quilt, but you do get high quality product from Sea to Summit. - Backwoods Pursuit

What Thru Hikers Have Said About the Sea To Summit Ember

I have used the quilt 2 times in the mid thirties. I slept pretty warm both nights, I took one star off for the pad straps. The straps are hard to adjust while you are on the pad if you want to tighten them up and they come unsnapped easily letting in drafts. I plan on replacing the factory straps with some elastic straps that will be easier to deal with

I just returned from a hiking trip in North Carolina where I was able to test the quilt in cold weather. Our first night on the trail, temps dropped down to about 28. I used a thermarest pro lite sleeping pad and my new sea to summit quilt along with a merino wool base layer and darn tough socks. I will say I have never been that warm when the temps were that low. There were times during the night when I had to pull the quilt down to cool off.

Hammock Gear Premium Burrow

Hammock Gear makes an absolute steal with the Premium Burrow as it gives you all the benefits of some of these more expensive options while keeping the costs down, allowing you to better gear up for your next thru hike.

They are a perfect blend of the range above the more "generic" quilts with totally static colors and heat and allows you some ability to change and tweak them to fit your needs on the trail.

Features and Benefits of the Hammock Gear Premium Burrow

  • Ultralight design suitable for both ground and hammock sleep systems.
  • Wide width is highly recommended for adequate coverage when used in ground sleeping scenarios.
  • Unique vertical and horizontal baffling system to minimize down migration
  • Horizontal chamber at the head end functions both as a draft collar and a barrier to vertical seams adding next to skin comfort around the user's face and neck.
  • Customizable Temperature Rating built for comfort, not survival like most brands.
  • Customizable Color Options for both inner and outer shells.
  • Customizable Length and Width Options for the perfect fit.
  • Customizable Footbox styles for a variety of ventilation and utility options.
  • Zipper Footbox:  #3 YKK separating zipper and cinch cord bottom can be cinched tight to retain heat or laid flat like a blanket to ventilate excess body heat.

  • Customizable Down Fill Options
  • RDS Certified 850 Fill Power DWR treated Goose Down
  • RDS Certified 950 Fill Power untreated Goose Down

Special Features (Pros) of the Hammock Gear Premium Burrow

Temperature Rating Based on Comfort Not Survival - For many this may not be new but for new hikers knowing that your temperature is for comfort and not bone shivering survival is super important!

Sewn Footbox - Keeps those precious toes and feet warmer overall than a open footbox that closes with a drawstring.

Drawbacks (Cons) for the Hammock Gear Premium Burrow

Order Lead Time - Since these are all custom order they have longer lead times and at current writing this was listed as 6-8 weeks, so you can't order this right before your trip.

I love to read how others use and interact with gear to get a better feel for the community and all the shipped products and not a lucky one that a person received.

Looking at the features and benefits is great, but taking a look at what real-and-actual customers have to say about a product offers a far more involved and deeper understanding.

Independent Reviews and Recommendations for the Hammock Gear Premium Burrow

In the end though I went with over stuffed premium versions because I know myself too well and I know that if I went with the Econ, I would always wish that I went just "a little" lighter. - Reddit

What Thru Hikers Have Said About the Hammock Gear Premium Burrow

I struggle with temperature regulation as a very petite 5 ft. 2 in. woman weight under 100lbs. I did not believe I would be able to be warm while hammocking under 50F degrees. This overquilt is an absolute gamechanger. It keeps me comfortable, it breathes, it is light, and the handmade quality is impeccable. If anything happens to my bag I will buy another in a heartbeat. - More on Hammock Gear

I finally went for this top quilt as I was getting into winter camping more and more. I purchased the zero deg. top quilt for my hammock and I could not be happier with the purchase. I have used it from 40 down to a low of 15 and I felt very comfortable throughout. - More on Hammock Gear

The features on these quilts are awesome. I had not realized how much I loved my Burrow until I went back to the old synthetic one for a night -- it lacks the details on the Burrow that I take for granted. I use my quilts both hammocking and tenting, and they work great for both. - More on Hammock Gear

My Opinion On the Hammock Gear Premium Burrow

I absolutely love this premium quilt as it comes in at a good price and they also offer an economy option if you are looking for warmth and need to cut back a little more.

They offer less customization then others but that is balanced out by the cost being far more aimed at hikers looking to gear out on a budget but not skimp on their safety.

UGQ Bandit Quilt

One of the more loved quilts on the Triple Crown and by just weekend warriors, the UGQ Bandit and the Bandit XL are amazing quilts that have an amazing array of customization options that fits every hikers dreams.

Features and Benefits of the UGQ Bandit Quilt

  • DYNAMIC TENSION CONTROL SYSTEM - The DTCS is a set of two adjustable elastic webbing running lengthwise along the left and right edges of the quilt in the torso. This elastic webbing is completely concealed in the edge detail of the quilt for a clean appearance and comfortable sleeping experience.
  • ULTRALIGHT FABRICS - M10T was developed to be a great all-around UL fabric that offers excellent wind/water resistance, has an incredibly soft hand feel, and is highly down proof (both in lab tests and in field use) all at a great price point.  It has a finished weight of only 0.66 oz/yd2, making it one of the thinnest/lightest taffeta nylon fabrics on the market.
  • DOWNS: ULTIMA800DD / ULTIMA850GD / ULTIMA950GD - BANDIT Quilts allow you to choose from three types of down: Ultima 800 fill power duck down; Ultima 850 fill power goose down; or for even lighter weight and superior performance in severe conditions, Ultima 950 fill power goose down. The combination of DWR shell materials and UltimaDOWN will give you the perfect balance between moisture control and breathability.
  • PAD ATTACHMENT SYSTEM - The BANDIT and XL BANDIT quilts are available with three possible options for use on a ground pad: NONE, Ultralight, and Deluxe

Special Features (Pros) of the UGQ Bandit Quilt

Baffle Layout - The quilts are all fully baffled and not sewn-through to prevent heat loss through the seams, which can plague some quilts in this cost bracket.

Footbox Options - Since all these quilts are custom you have the choice of three different footboxes, from the zipper and drawcord, to sewn flat, or insulated!

Dynamic Tension Control - This feature helps keep the edges that normally are able to flat more taught and pulled up against you helping ensure heat entrapment.

Drawbacks (Cons) for the UGQ Bandit Quilt

Long Lead Times - With near 10 week delivery you need to know your scheduled departure time long enough in advance to ensure this can be delivered to you prior.

Independent Reviews and Recommendations for the UGQ Bandit Quilt

Overall I LOVE this quilt. It is so light and fluffy and can pack down so small. I would wholeheartedly recommend UGQ and quilts in general. It was not any more expensive than a backpacking sleeping bag and being able to customize it alone is well worth the money. I get cold really easily but found the temperature control from the quilt design and quality to be better than my old mummy bag. - Cycle Sorbet

Without a doubt I would recommend this company and their products as I am more than thrilled with what I have received here.  Absolutely awesome in terms of quality and construction.  Very fair pricing which puts most of their competitors to shame.  Very well thoughtout and very customizable in terms of your order. - The Outdoor Gear Review

The quality of the quilt, the stitching and the loft is outstanding! This is a pro level product and great care is put into making this feel and look top level (or that’s what I presume, I don’t think its possible to just throw some fabric together and have it look and feel this nice) - Trail Hunger

What Thru Hikers Have Said About the UGQ Bandit Quilt

What an amazing quilt. I’m a big guy and absolutely love my UGQ Bandit 30 degree. It is so light, comfy and well made. I was literally sleeping at 30ish with windchill and slept warm with just base layer pants and T-shirt. The quality is unbelievable. It was customizable to my liking from color to toe box.

I love my top quilt. I ordered the 10 degree and overstuff in the foot box (my feet get cold even in summer). I finally got to test it out in the ADK’s in upstate NY and I stayed toasty warm. When my feet got to warm I put them outside the foot box to cool off but still stayed covered up above and warm. I can’t say enough about their customer service.

My UGQ bandit is the best backpacking purchase I’ve ever made. The amount of thought put into the design is like a German bauhaus product. Every detail has been carefully considered and everything superfluous has been removed.

My Opinion On the UGQ Bandit Quilt

I have heavily considered purchasing a UGQ Bandit but have been held back due to the longer lead time and being unable to comfortably figure out what I exactly want from my quilt, i'm almost froze due to the volume of configurations as I learn more about fabrics and build this is high on my list!

750FP Down - This means more down is needed to achieve the warmth temperatures it is rated for and, hence, a heavier quilt than other competition.

Independent Reviews and Recommendations for the ENO Igniter

Overall I was very satisfied with the ENO Ignitor topquilt. It met most of the expectations I have of topquilts; ease of entry while in a hammock, easy to adjust though lacking a neck/head closure, and was true to its temperature rating. - Trailspace

Would I like to have a set of ENO quilts? Absolutely. These quilts are well-made, pack well, and perform well. However, At the time of writing this article, you can buy a full-length quilt from a competitor that has better fill (900 fill-power goose down) for less than the 750 fill-power duck down offered by ENO. Time will tell what the market will bear. - The Ultimate Hang

When the foot box is closed and the draw cord cinched up, there is a lot of draw cord flopping around the feet. I got just a bit tangled up in the cord a couple times, but it didn’t bother me much. I don’t see a way around having the cord with this type of foot box and so this may be unavoidable. In summary, I really like this topquilt. It kept me warm and covered just as it is supposed to. - Industry Outsider

What Thru Hikers Have Said About the ENO Igniter

This top quilt is outstanding. works great in the hammock, and on the couch. The footbox works well, but the cord is long and there is lots of slack to move out of the way when you cinch it down. This is a quality product that is built well. I expect to get many years of service from this quilt.

Great addition to the under quilt. Having the pair kept me really warm. Nice that its more of a blanket than a sleeping bag so you can also have a sleeping bag for extra warmth or use to wrap around you in the early mornings by the fire

I am very happy with the quality of the top quilt 30° paired with ENO under quilt kept me very warm at a temperature of 34° I would recommend it to family and friends just wish eno had a 0° undercoat and topcoat very happy with their product
